Let’s Talk History

A Conversation with Fiona J. McKenzie about Margaret Fay Shaw

Margaret Fay Shaw was born in Glenshaw in 1903, to the prosperous steel manufacturing family of Henry Clay Shaw and his wife Fanny Patchin. This illustrated presentation will describe her early life in Pittsburgh and the work she carried out in Scotland which has made her one of the world’s most important Scottish folklore collectors, despite being a native of Pennsylvania. Presented by Fiona J. Mackenzie, MA. MA, Dip. Lib, Aberdeen University and University of the West of Scotland, from the Scottish Highlands. Ms. Mackenzie was the Archivist for the Canna Collections in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland for almost ten years. She will join us via Zoom. Attendees will attend in person at the Library. The program will be recorded.

Ukranian Egg Art

Demonstration
Pysanky is the ancient Eastern European art of egg decorating, of which the Ukrainian version is arguably the most famous. The name comes from the verb to write, as you use a stylus (called a kistka) to write with wax on the egg shell. The process is similar to batik. Join Marilan Caito who will demonstrate this art while lecturing on the tools, techniques and history of the art. Dozens of beautiful eggs will be on display during the demonstration. Bonus! One lucky attendee will be awarded the completed egg! Marilan (Hovanec) Caito has presented demonstrations and taught hands-on classes in the art of “Pysanky” at Community College, community centers, libraries, and numerous senior residences for over 50 years. Her passion is to share this traditional folk art and its rich history with new audiences.

Classes
In this hands-on class, students aged 18 and up create their own Ukrainian Pysanky eggs with one-on-one coaching while learning about tools, techniques, and cultural history including the meaning of different colors and symbols. The class requires attendance at TWO SESSIONS one week apart and has a STRICT LIMIT of 14 students. Pre-payment of $35.00 covers all basic supplies including kistka tool, wax, candle, two blown eggs, and instruction pamphlet (additional dyes and tools available for purchase). No prior art skill is needed. No refunds after supplies are purchased, though students may pick up supplies and instruction booklet if unable to attend.

Faith, Doubt, and Dialogue

April 30, 6:30 pm

Join Dr. Michele Greene for conversations about theology and ethics.

Join Michele Greene, educator, social justice advocate, and spiritual seeker, for an evening of thought-provoking conversation on how theology—far from being divisive—can actually help us connect across differences. Whether your path is rooted in faith or not, exploring what we believe about the divine, humanity, and justice can reveal surprising commonalities. Together, we’ll consider how open-hearted discussions about God, meaning, and ethics can foster greater understanding in a diverse world.
