In and around Pittsburgh, many former church buildings have been converted to social halls and pubs, sold to new religious communities, or stand empty. The political news is full of stories about religion, especially the political influence of people who identify as “Evangelical.” Roman Catholic churches in the Diocese of Pittsburgh have been combined with other churches to form larger parishes. The children and grandchildren of the boomer generation, now nearing retirement or retired, are less religiously active than their parents. What is happening to religion in America? Whether religious or not, these changes have impacted American culture and life.
